Getting Started

Adaptive Driving Control Services

In 2011 Steffy’s Garage, Inc. recognized the need for a facility in Lancaster County that was certified and equipped to install and service adaptive driving controls, wheelchair lifts and other handicap adapted equipment. We are fully certified by OVR (PA Office of Vocational Rehabilitation), National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA), and certified through many handicap equipment manufacturers. Our mission is to develop relationships with our clients and provide high-quality installation, service, repairs, and get persons with disabilities the right solution the first time.

Adaptive Driving Equipment Installations & Repairs

Process of Legally Acquiring Adaptive Driving Equipment

1. Determine if there is any financial assistance available?

  • Were you injured at work? will Workman’s Comprehensive Insurance pay for services? Do you have a disability that requires a vehicle to be modified in order for you to get to your job? Visit PA Vocational Rehabilitation Services.
  • Are you a Veteran? If so, the VA may pay for driver rehabilitation services and/or vehicle modifications.
  • Do you have a disability associated with an organization that offers grants? (i.e. MS Society)

2. Select a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (*see our recommended list). The CDRS will:

  • Complete a comprehensive driving evaluation — this includes trying various type of adaptive equipment
  • Assist you in completing any PennDOT paperwork
  • Train you on the adaptive equipment. The number of lessons varies for each person.
  • Prepare you for and accompany you for the PA State Driving Exam in the training vehicle. You will take the same on-road test as everyone else. After passing, your driver’s license will be updated with the code — “#4 — Special Equipment.”
  • The CDRS will then write a detailed prescription of the equipment needed for your vehicle. If you do not have a vehicle, the CDRS can give you guidance on what vehicle(s) would be most appropriate.

3. Select an equipment modifier who is certified by the National Mobility Equipment Dealer’s Association — NMEDA and arrange to have your vehicle modified.
